Steel and Gilt

2nd Industrial Revolution and the Gilded Age

The Second Industrial Revolution occurred about 100 years after the first Industrial Revolution in Britain. It originated in the United States of America following the Civil War, lasting from about 1865 to 1910. It was a total cultural, technological, and social revolution that rocked the boat, from the slums of the Lower East Side to the mansions of the billionaires. During this time, millions of immigrants flowed into the cities of America, dozens of new inventions were patented, and the concept of the modern corporation was born. Also known as the Gilded Age this period was famous for its contrasts: while one small part of the population was extremely wealthy, living in mansions and distributing their millions in various philanthropic activities, the majority of the population was living in the slums, a single family to a room, and working up to 16 hours a day. It was a time of nascent labor unions, of attempts at monopoly which were really "oligopoly", and urbanization; a time of vertical integration, mass production, and corruption. A time like no other that can only be described as one of the single most important revolutions in our history.
